Check out our first interview with the multi-talented EL JAY
R&B Supreme: Introduce yourself to world
EL JAY: What's up everyone this is EL JAY singer, songwriter, dancer, model, and actor. I am the son of R&B platinum singer Rome with major hit "I Belong To You". Growing up I always knew I wanted to be an entertainer, been working at my craft for 4 to 6 years to created my own path outside of just being Rome's son.
R&B Supreme: You're are a talented guy being a singer, songwriter, dance, model, and actor. But the fans want to know do you play any instruments along with those string of talents ?
EL JAY: I do actually! I recently just picked back up playing the piano to work into my music more.
R&B Supreme: Nice! By looking at your bio we see that you're heavily influenced by the late and great Michael Jackson. Why do you look up to him ?
EL JAY: Definitely! The reason I look up to MJ is because he set a bar so high that no one has ever came close to accomplishing. He set stones for everyone growing up and how his music and dancing it just touched the whole world, that is was really caught my eye the most. Also how he used his singing and dancing to connect with everyone.
R&B Supreme: Absolutely! What would you consider you favorite song and album by MJ ?
EL JAY: Either between Off The Wall or Thriller. I get asked this question every time and never really know which one since it's not a fair question (haha). But I today I would say Thriller and favorite song theirs a tie between the song "Thriller", "Billie Jean", and "Human Nature".
R&B Supreme: You're not the only who get stuck between those both albums (haha). Since we're on the question of influences, what impact does your father R&B artist Rome have on your career?
EL JAY: An impact would be exposure since the world knows him, they would know me from him. Being around as he was an artists made me learn a lot about the industry. At the end of the day what I do and how I express myself through the entertainment side is what's really gonna define me. People will have to make that decision if they either love me or just think I going off of my dad's career.
R&B Supreme: Good way of thinking of it. What motivates to pursue this career as an all around entertainer?
EL JAY: Honestly, it's really just my hunger, the more I do it freely it just pushes me to get better and better. You know a lot of people that are Indie artists working 3 or 4 jobs while still trying to do music. The fact that I went through the same working multiple jobs and more and more I've been doing, made me able to just focus on music. The blessing in that is just taking it in everyday and the things I've been going through, I've been able to write about it and record and that helps me in a major way better than I can really express myself.
R&B Supreme: Finding an outlet to let things out is great. Since you are an R&B artists who is heavily influenced by old R&B from MJ and your father. What is your thoughts on the current state of R&B? Cause we see people are saying it's dying or it's not good as it use to be.
EL JAY: Honestly, I would say people are saying that because of multiple things. But I can tell you one thing, R&B is not dying. I think it just comes down to what people look at as far as the style of it. Cause you can look back in the 90's, I was born 1989 and R&B in the 90s changed the genre forever. The 70s and 80s both took rhythm and blues in the another direction. But the 90s is the pinnacle of R&B since it had a lot of great singers and vocalist came into the late 80s and 90s. In my opinion to a certain extent the genre is constantly evolving, more artists are just doing more with music to represent R&B in another way.
R&B Supreme: PREACH ! In your recent project what the concept behind it and why the title Red Diary ?
EL JAY: Well, I always had a diary growing up with different things that I had went through in my life. It got to a point to where a lot of personal things that I was writing about that I was going through and trying to figure certain things were kept in my diary. I felt at this stage of where I'm at in my life it was time to share of piece that with the world. That's really where the whole concept and idea came from with that which is also gonna lead to my short films that are coming soon.
R&B Supreme: Nice ! You're lead single "Fall In Love", what's the story behind that?
EL JAY: Definitely, definitely! It's produced by Gal of Track Martians Music Group and major writer was EJ who wrote for artists like Jacob Latimore. I'm actually giving you a spoiler alert, he's actually going to be working on a record with me and my pops, so definitely lookout for that. The whole concept with "Fall In Love" is that next person you end up talking to wants that full package, but you feel you just don't got it anymore. But the way she has me feeling makes me feel like damn you make me wanna "Fall In Love" and than you just say let's give it a try and see where this goes.
R&B Supreme: Cool ! You said that EJ who wrote this single is going to working on music with you and your father in the future. Is that going to be a duet or collab between you two ?
EL JAY: Yeah definitely, EJ's gonna do the collab along with some separate work between both me and him. It's gonna be a mixture of everything going on.
R&B Supreme: Okay that's cool a father and son collab. Back to "Fall In Love" real quick should we be expecting a video for this lead single ?
EL JAY: I'm glad you brought this up with actually just shoot the video for this single about three weeks ago in Malibu, California. It was a dope set, everybody on the set did a great job. We're actually going to be dropping that video sometime this month.
R&B Supreme: I'm sure along with the fans we can't wait to see it. What are your future plans and goals as an overall entertainer ?
EL JAY: I am in the business side of music as well creating my own production team for film and television too. I am also in the process of having my own label and really just getting a collected group of artists together and showcase their work to the world. I also have a few scripts in progress right now for film and television and also putting together a tour. That is all what's going to be going on just for this year. While also working on starting my debut album.
R&B Supreme: You're gonna be one busy individual for the rest of this year with all those plans. What do you think you bring different from any other artists?
EL JAY: I would say my style of music, sound, looks and just the energy, I normally feed off of energy. Energy to me is every and that's really what I'm bringing to the table. Something different along with more entertainment connecting with the crowds. I recently wrapped up a tour with Hollywood Hoops where we went to many different high schools and did shows. Just the reaction from the kids in the high school both male and female has been great and it's been pushing me to work even harder.
R&B Supreme: Was that your first tour?
EL JAY: No, that was my second tour, this tour was just on a whole different level dealt with a lot more people, along with the production for it , it was just all on another level. It was definitely a blessing to be apart of.
R&B Supreme: Okay we see you! Now are you currently signed or are you an indie artist?
EL JAY: I am currently signed to an independent label 410 West Entertainment, those are the ones that's been behind me, helping me with my career, and just getting the ball rolling.
R&B Supreme: The fans wanna know when you're not working on your craft as an entertainer, what does EL JAY do on his spare time?
EL JAY: You can catch me at the basketball court, the movies, the mall, or just chilling with my friends
R&B Supreme: Okay you're into basketball, do you follow the NBA and if you do what is your favorite team ?
EL JAY: Yeah I try to catch it when it's on lately I haven't been able to. But my favorite team is the LA Lakers, but I just love basketball, love it.
R&B Supreme: Respect respect! At least you're staying with them through it all (haha). Any shout outs you wanna give?
EL JAY: Of course! I would like to give a shout to my business affairs manager, producer Mark, Capital Gains, Big Mike, Vlado Footwear, Don Digital Jones, and Thomas Hollywood Hoops really thank him and shout out to Track Martians of course.
R&B Supreme: What is the one thing you want the world to know about EL JAY?
EL JAY: The one thing I want the world to know is that once you see me perform and hear my music and it'll take them from there.
